Star Wars locations near Douz
Southern Tunisia stood in for the planet Tatooine. Several filming locations can be combined with a stay in the Sahara.
Matmata: Hotel Sidi Driss
The troglodyte Hotel Sidi Driss in Matmata was used for interior scenes of the Lars family home in the original Star Wars film. Matmata is about 137 km by road from our camp, roughly 2 h 15 without stops.
Chott el Djerid
The salt flats of the Chott el Djerid, near Nefta, were the setting for the exterior of the Lars homestead. The Tozeur–Kébili road crosses the chott on a causeway, and Lonely Planet notes that landspeeder scenes were filmed here, so you see the landscape on the way from Tozeur.
Mos Espa, near Tozeur
The Mos Espa set built for the prequel films stands in the desert near Ong Jmal, near Nefta, west of Tozeur. It is the furthest of these from our camp, roughly 200 km by road.
