One day or two in the Tunisian Sahara?

The answer depends mostly on where you start. Here are the real road distances to our camp and what an overnight stay changes.

Start with the driving time

The Sahara around Douz is far from the main beach resorts. The table shows one-way distances to Desert Camp Sabria.

Approximate road distances to Desert Camp Sabria
FromRoad distance to the campDriving time without stops
Douz38 km0 h 40
Tozeur (town)150 km2 h 50
Djerba (Houmt Souk)271 km4 h 50

Sousse447 km5 h 55
Hammamet525 km6 h 50

Distances and times come from OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM) and are rounded. Real driving times are longer with stops, checkpoints and slower desert roads.

When one day can work

From Tozeur or Douz, a day visit is realistic: the drive is short enough to leave time for a camel tour or a 4x4 ride and to head back before dark. Ask us on WhatsApp whether activities can be booked without an overnight stay.

From Djerba, a day trip means about ten hours of driving there and back, without stops. It is possible, but most of the day is spent on the road.

What a night adds

If you stay overnight you see the dunes at sunset, have dinner at the camp if you book dinner and breakfast, sit by the campfire and look at the night sky far from city lights. The next morning you can be in the dunes again before you drive back.

From the coastal resorts of Sousse, Hammamet and Monastir, an overnight stay is the sensible choice: the drive alone is six to seven hours each way.
