Stargazing in the Sahara: Milky Way nights at the old fort of Sabria

Sabria, on the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental about 30 km (38 km by road) from Douz, is good for stargazing because there is almost no light pollution. On clear, moonless nights the Milky Way stretches across the sky above Desert Camp Sabria. Bring warm layers: desert nights get cold.

Why is the desert near Douz so good for stargazing?

There is almost no light pollution, and the dunes give you an open horizon.

When can I see the Milky Way?

On clear nights around the new moon, once the campfire has died down. Check a moon calendar when you choose your dates. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons to visit.

Evenings at the camp

After a Tunisian dinner, evenings at the camp are spent around the campfire, then under the stars.

What should I bring?

  • Warm layers and a hat
  • A head torch, ideally with a red-light mode
  • A tripod if you want to take photos
  • Spare batteries: they drain faster in the cold

How do I photograph the Milky Way?

Use a tripod, a wide lens and a long exposure, and step away from the campfire and tent lights. Our photo of the Milky Way above the fort was taken at the camp.
